Altered Book Tutorial 2

Altered Book Journal Part 2 ~ The Pages

Now that you have made an altered book journal it's time to fill it with pages. I enjoy making my pages in batches for a number of reasons.
1. It's easy to make them in an assembly line fashion. While one part is drying you can move on to another page. It's also easy to work on each step on multiple pages at a time.
2. It's nice having a bunch of background pages made up in advance, ready to journal on as the creative juice flows. Having gessoed text paper or magazine photos or painted papers on the background helps keep the blank page freeze from happening.
3. I tend to work in my studio/office early in the day and do journaling in the evening while watching tv. Having my pages made in advance fits well with my art habits.
4. Making background pages is a great way to jump start creativity. Often while I am making background pages I will get all kinds of ideas for art journal pages or ways to try techniques. I admit that I often multi-task and bounce between projects and techniques while making background pages.

The tutorial for the pages is in PDF form so that you can download it and print it out if you like.  The PDF is hosted on Google Drive. Follow this link:Tutorial

I have a variety of themed vintage paper packs in my Etsy shop {found on brighton}. The paper packs offer a variety of papers that can be used for background and collage.

  4. Mary, I'm so excited!!!!!!! Just read through your journal page tutorial and made my first page. Forgot to gesso it first because I was so excited to get some color on the bookpaper on top of the watercolor paper. So went back and scraped gesso on with a key card. Then couldn't wait for it to dry and added some spray paint. What a gorgeous finish. Love love love it!!! Thank you for sharing. This is the most fun ever :)

  7. Just wondering but do roughly how many backgrounds do you make per sit down? Do you still do this method?

    1. I do still do this method, Cody. The number of pages I make per sit down varies. Sometimes I will make 4-8 in an assembly line fashion, Other times I may just make 1 or 2 for a current page idea. Sometimes just making background pages will stir up new creativity. Hope that helps Cody.
